Biography
William Henry Walmisley was born on 14 October 1851 in Stockwell Green, Brixton. He and Sophie Rothery were married on 23 August 1880 in Parish Church, Ripley, Yorkshire. He died in 1913, at age ~62.
Attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurest and was commissioned as Ensign into the 2nd Foot, serving in England and Ireland between 1865-1876 (Sub-Lieutenant 1871 and almost immediately appointed Lieutenant. He transferred to the 80th foot, joining the regiment in Hong Kong on 15 Oct 1973. Served in the Perak expedition in 1875, with Major-General Colborne; 80th relieved by by 74th HLI on 13 Jan 1876. He returned to London and resigned his commission on 26 July 1876. Marriage, by licence, witnessed by William Sowerby and Henry Thorpe. They moved to the Cape Colony in 1881 and he was appointed (Railways) District Clerk at Mafeking on 1 Jan 1901. Served in the Mafeking Town Guard (Railway Division) as Lieutenant and Adjutant and was present during the seige in 1899. He was invalided back to England in Oct 1901 and later was diagnosed as suffering from progressive muscular atrophy - no records exist to show whether he received a pension, either from the Cape Government or the Colonial Government. Recorded as an accountant on son's birth certificate; as a Captain in the Royal West Surrey Regiment on Daughter's marriage certificate in 1923.
