He moved to the USA in 1922, but served again in the British Army - as Major (Royal Engineers), stationed in Washington DC and New York - during World War II. Resident at 27 Chartfield Avenue, Wandsworth at time of death, of carcinomatosis and carcinoma of bronchus. Death reported by E Lawson, his cousin. An obituary in the Thomas Cook magazine called him a 'lovable personality with the gift of making friends, infinite patience and willingness to help anyone who sought his advice. His noble character, sincere in all his thoughts and deeds, with charm and a whimsically humorous manner aided by a gift of choosing 'pithy' words.

Edward Beaumont Smith was born in 1797. He died in 1887, at age ~90, in Kemp, Tasmania.
